Water filters come in a variety of types and styles. One factor that differentiates them from one another is the kind of water filtration method they use. Different water filtration technologies are- Distillation, Carbon Absorption, Microporous Basic Filtration, Reverse Osmosis and Ultraviolet Radiations.

Distillation is probably the oldest method of water purification. In this method water is first heated up to boiling point. The water vapors formed rises to a condenser where cooling water lowers the temperature. So the vapor is condensed, collected and stored to give pure water. Most of the contaminants remain behind in the liquid phase vessel.

It is not considered to be an effective process of filtration as it removes all the oxygen from the water. The contaminants having boiling point less then the boiling point of water are not removed. Moreover, a volatile substance like ammonia is also not removed from water. Such filters consume a lot of energy and water.

Carbon filters are very effective in cleaning water. When water flows through carbon filters, contaminants adsorb or stick to the surfaces of the carbon particles and the water is passed through it. Activated carbon filters are reported to be the best method available for removing specific organic chemicals, including some pesticide residues. Studies have also shown that GAC (granular activated carbon) adsorption is an effective method for radon removal. Carbon water filter devices are available in several sizes and designs. They are relatively inexpensive to replace and ensure a continued high standard of filtration.

In a microporous filtration system, water goes through three different layers of filtration- depth layer, screen layer and surface layer. The first layer is depth layer for removing all the solid dust particles from the water. This layer removes around 98% of impurity from water. Surface layer comes after that and removes up to 99.99% of impurities. At last we have screen layer which provided us highly pure water by filtering out all the tiny particles, microorganisms and germs.

Reverse Osmosis filters are in great demand today because they provide us highly purified water. The membrane used in these filters has very tiny porous size that stops all the impurities on its surface only and provides us clean and germ free water.

The contaminated water is put on one side of the membrane and pressure is applied to stop and then reverse the osmotic process. It generally takes a lot of pressure. The result is extremely finely filtered water. These systems may take up to 5 liters of water to produce one clean liter.

Ultraviolet radiations are very effective in killing germs and hence makes water germ free. Mercury low pressure lamp generating 254 nm UV light is an efficient way of doing this. All the germs and microorganisms are either killed or inactivated by this process, giving you clean and clear water.
