Variable Speed Pool Pumps – The Future of Swimming Pools

By choosing the proper pump, Swimming pool owners can expect savings of at least $400/year.

Very few swimming pool owners realize the energy usage of their very own pool and spa pump.  In fact, the pool motor is actually one of the most energy guzzling appliances they have in their house.  The reason is that most swimming pool pumps are built using an out-dated single speed motor that runs at a preset speed and horsepower.  With electricity supply in abundance, and energy conservation a low priority – this has been the industry standard for years.

My existing pool and spa pump is using how much electricity? A recent study proved that to operate California’s 1.2 million pools and spas demands approximately the same production as one nuclear power or two conventional energy plants (study by Davis Energy Group for Pacific Gas & Electric – 2004).  A huge impact on our current power conservation efforts must stem from all the energy in-efficient pool and spa pumps across the United States.  Arizona also has an incredible abundance of swimming pools per house, which is why AZ pool companies are switching to these incredible new pumps.

The solution? Pumps working smarter, not harder.

In the recent years, there have been some dramatic improvements in the swimming pool industry – regarding pool pumps and swimming pool motors.  The variable drive, variable speed pool pump has revolutionized the pool industry and its efforts to save and conserve power.  Designed and manufactured to use less energy, these new pumps are using permanent magnetic motors.  Permanent magnet motors, usually used in hybrid cars, provide about 30% energy savings over standard induction motors. As the swimming pool operator programs this pump to work at the minimum required capacity for each pool task (heating, cleaning, filtration, water features, etc.) power reduction can be as much as 90%!

By using a swimming pool pump at its lowest speed required to complete a job, it will drastically cut the energy consumed (simply because it requires less power to push water slowly than quickly).  Did you know?  On a typical pool task, if a pump can reduce the speed by 1/2, then the energy will be reduced to 1/8.  Simply put, these new pumps allow the pool and spa owner to program and “dial in” the pump speed to achieve the minimum electricity use.

Energy Savings of $620 to $1,350

According to Pentair Pool Products, their IntelliFlo® and IntelliPro™ variable drive pumps routinely reduce energy use up to ninety percent, depending on the models and circumstances for average savings of $620 to $1,350 annually.  Many swimming pool owners are having their out-dated pumps replaced because the huge monetary savings will actually pay for the new variable speed swimming pool pump.

Electricity delivery charges are even higher in Arizona, and with Phoenix’s huge pool count, this new pool pump has become an absolute necessity for pool companies in Phoenix when constructing new swimming pools.  California’s attention to eco-friendly products makes switching to an power efficient pump even more necessary.

Specific Examples of how IntelliFlo pumps by Pentair can be used in your pool & spa:

First and foremost, this pump can be used for an in-floor cleaning system booster pump, and it’s set at 2900 Rev’s per minute, which is approximately a 2 horsepower pump.  The same swimming pool pump can be dialed down to a one-half horsepower swimming pool pump to circulate & clean the water of the pool.  With some easy computer technology, the same swimming pool pump can be used as a booster pump for the hot tub therapies (imagine a low speed therapy and a faster one – all from the same pump, and the press of a button!)  Another practical use is the ability to control the volume of a waterfall or swimming pool water feature (it is also known to be used by high end residential Phoenix landscape design companies to control the flow & sound of custom landscape waterfalls or waterfeatures).  The IntelliFlo Pentair pump can be programmed for two speeds (actually more) -  giving you a low speed waterfall for a quiet evening outside on the patio, or you can turn the speed faster for FULL EFFECT for a backyard party!
