How to Repair Holes in Wood Houses when Preparing to Paint
How to Fill Holes in Wood Houses before You Paint then Sand
It would be easier if a wooden house needed no more than occasional house repair maintenance. Only scrape and caulk some, toss down some painting drop cloths, and roll on some layers of high quality exterior paint.
Maintaining your house is more difficult. For a wide variety of reasons, one almost always has to fill the wooden surface of your home.
My roughly twenty-five year old home required quite a bit of work. The galvanized sheet metal edging near the roof gutters leaked and enabled the water to soak the overhang board. As the house aged, the wood became rotten and the protective coat of paint flaked.
I researched how to get it done right. I was worried whether regular wood filler would last.
My next door neighbor patched his wood facing boards frequently in an endless battle rot from termites. This guy’s work quality stood the test of time. I wanted know why his repairs did not crack.
Fix Wood Holes with the Auto Repair Filler Called Bondo then Use Discounted Cordless Sanders to Finish Sanding
He said a contractor had recommended to always apply Bondo to fill larger holes in wood. To get a better understanding see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bondo_(putty)
I had used Bondo on a car repair. Bondo was heavy and durable. It permitted sanding and lathing. When he suggested doing this, I instantly knew that it would do the job.
With auto filler, the approach is to make repairs in steps with thick layers at the outset and thinner sections to finish. Furthermore, you can do fine finishing work, with ordinary kitchen wax paper and wood to shape. When sanding and finishing prior to painting just use one of the many woodworking power tools to make the Bondo blend smoothly with the wood.
If you have an old wood deck, you should be aware that you can also apply this auto patcher to fix splits in the surface of your wood deck. It is sometimes necessary, when you are preping a redwood deck for treatment.
Note the fact that Bondo finishes with a reddish hew and this will be obvious, if you only use a transparent water proofing on your wood deck. If you want to preserve a wooden deck that has Bondo, just cover it with a dark stain.
Also you don’t have to look for an auto parts store to get Bondo. You can get Bondo at Home Depot or Lowes. You probably would also like to know that my house wood fixing job shows no signs of deterioration after many years.
