All homeowners have a duty to look after their home exterior, but one of the most important areas to conduct regular maintenance is on the guttering system. Ask an estate agent for guttering advice – they will tell you that there should be no bends in your guttering. Clean and well-maintained gutters add to your home’s saleability. If you want something that is easy to maintain then a good choice is aluminium gutters.

We would recommend that you clean your gutters a couple of times each year to keep them in great condition. If your gutters are clogged with debris such as leaves and twigs the rain will not run off or drain properly. Blockages can then cause the rainwater to spill over the top of the guttering and this can cause long-term damage. Over time this can cause damage to the home’s foundation.

So that you catch all the leaves when they fall, it is best to clean your gutters every Autumn, and you may like to do it in the Spring too. Keep an eye on any rust development in your aluminium gutters. Make sure there are no loose nails. You don’t want your gutters hanging off the house so please ensure they are securely attached to the property.

Once the debris that has gathered in your guttering has been removed, rinse it down to ensure you have got all the last bits. By cleaning the downspout too then this will help prevent more debris forming and clogging it up in the future. If you find the water not running into the downspout you can remove the downspout, clean it and then replace it.

It is always an idea to make sure that the water coming out of the downspout is being efficiently diverted. You don’t want the water emptying out on the ground where it will cause erosion.

Another option for you as the homeowner is to consider gutter guards, as this will reduce the guttering maintenance time you have to spend looking after them.

In truth, some people feel that gutter guards are a pricey and unnecessary addition to their home guttering system. Of course, it is important to remember that smaller natural debris can still enter the gutter, so this will need periodically checking. Natural matter always breaks down and this will, over time, form some sort of debris in your guttering system. In some cases, debris can still form over the gutter guard itself so it is recommended that this cleaned manually. Whereas gutter guards can help many homeowners, many feel that they can actually do more harm than good and tend to steer clear of them.

So, be sure to opt for aluminium gutters to help you keep on top of your guttering woes.
