Garden shed plans are the first avenue of thought if you are looking to add a new element to your backyard. While many people may just hit the local gardening stores and look at the models already designed, most people will not find the perfect shed for their own needs this way. If this describes your situation, consider making your own plans from scratch!

A shed will become a part of your home for years into the future, good or bad. Why settle for something that was designed for the mass market when you can take the creativity in your own hands and design one that is exactly what you need?

Looking online for free and sample plans is a great place to start because it will give you some great ideas as to different features you may want to include. This is a great way to see what is on the market and consider the elements of your own structure.

Many plans will tell you what types of wood and tools should be used as well as detailed instructions and tips for putting it all together.

Here are 7 things to consider as you look through these plans and start to think about your own design.

Windows: how much sunlight are you going to need in the shed? How many will you need, and where should they be placed?

Workbench: If you need one or two, how big and where should they be placed?

Roofs: there are several different types of roofing that can be used, so make sure to consider the different styles and colors and pick something that looks nice with your home.

Doors: Double or single doors? Maybe doors on both ends drive-thru style?

Other Features: There are some special features that could be selected, such as a hidden area for tools. You may also have your own ideas to implement.

Type: do you need a shed that will stand on its own, or one that will hook onto a larger garage or car port? Or, maybe you need just a very small tool shed or a converted chicken coop?

Overall Size: You need to measure the area it is to be located so you do not get one that is too large or small.

While looking through the free garden plans may lead to a great selection for some people, others will need to take different style and design elements from different plans and work it into their own unique plan.
