Do’s And Don’ts of Masonry Drilling – Part Two
Part Two: the Donts
When drilling in concrete there are a few Don’ts that are beneficial to heed.
Dont use bits that are much larger than you need. This goes along with a Do in part one. This is emphasized because it makes a lot of difference in cost. It will also increase the likelihood of bit breakage. Longer bits, especially, tend to bend and break, if one is not extremely careful. If you are going through a 4 to 6 slab, dont use a 27 bit. The bit will become worn out in the first 6 and youll have a bit that is shot while two thirds of the bit remains unused. Thats expensive.
The next Dont is dont force a bit into a hole while drilling. Let the weight of the hammer do the work. One can create too much swarf (drilling dust and debris), by pushing on the hammer. The drilling will go no faster with your additional weight. A very important Do that goes along with this Dont is to clear the hole while drilling. This is done about every 2 ” to 3 of depth by pulling the bit straight out of the hole while the drill is running. Removing the bit dust from the hole can increase the drilling speed. Also, the abrasion caused by too much swarf can build heat and reduce the life of the bit. It is also possible to completely jam a bit in a hole. This can happen while drilling a deep hole and not clearing it often enough. Sometimes, nothing one does can remove such a jam and the bit has to be cut off in the hole. Not good.
Don’t snap your bit by leaning on the drill. Once you get started keep your drill straight.
Fro horizontal drilling, don’t go bigger. Use a smaller hammer, even if it takes more time, so you can keep the bit going in the same direction and avoid breaking the bit.
Don’t use too long of a bit. Start smaller and finish with you long bit to save energy, time and money.
Dont use low quality bits. The steel that a bit is made of varies in quality. The carbide tips are not all of the highest quality. Much research and investment goes into the production of high quality bits such as Pestline Brand Bits. Inferior bits are being produced in far away places around the world to take advantage of cheap labor and materials. That is not necessarily the way to get the most value for the dollar you spend.
